What You'll Need

  • Heat press machine (clamshell or swing-away)
  • Your DTF transfer
  • A heat-press compatible garment or substrate
  • Parchment, cotton or silicone sheet (cover sheet)
  • Firm, flat pressing surface or heat-press pad

Step 1 – Prepare Your Garment

Pre-press your garment for 5-10 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles. A dry, flat surface is essential for a strong bond. Allow the garment to cool slightly before positioning your transfer.

Step 2 – Position the Transfer

Place the DTF transfer film-side up, white-side down on the garment. Align carefully — once heat is applied the transfer cannot be repositioned.

Step 3 – Apply Heat

Cover the transfer with a parchment or silicone sheet to protect both the transfer and your platen.

  • Temperature: 285°F — confirm recommended setting for your heat press
  • Time: 10 seconds — confirm with your press and substrate type
  • Pressure: Heavy pressure.
Press firmly and evenly for the full duration. Avoid lifting the platen early.

Step 4 – Peel the Film

After pressing, allow the transfer to cool for the peel method appropriate to your transfer type:

  • Hot Peel: Peel the film immediately while still warm.
  • Cold Peel: Allow the transfer to cool completely before peeling.

Check your specific transfer packaging or product listing for the recommended peel method.

Step 5 – Final Press (Optional but Recommended)

For extra durability and a smoother finish, place the cover sheet or cotton back over the applied design and press again for 5-10 seconds at the same temperature. This helps the ink fully bond and gives the print a softer hand feel.

Washing & Care Instructions

To keep your DTF print looking its best, follow these care guidelines:

  • Turn the garment inside out before washing.
  • Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle.
  • Use a mild detergent — avoid bleach and fabric softeners.
  • Do not iron directly on the print.
  • Tumble dry on low heat or hang to dry.
  • Do not dry clean.

Tips for Best Results

  • Always test on a sample or scrap piece before pressing your final garment.
  • Ensure your heat press is fully calibrated and reaches an even temperature across the platen.
  • Cotton, polyester, and cotton-poly blends generally press well — always verify your substrate is heat-press compatible.
  • Store unused transfers flat, away from direct sunlight and humidity.
